Teaching Children Importance of Time
We have come across that by the time a child reaches Grade 3 or Grade 4, he suddenly starts feeling the shortage of time. He seems to be juggling between school, tuitions and extracurricularactivities and even 24 hrs.In a day seems to be too less.   Time management is the key. What is time management?Time management means to identify most important jobs of the day, and then to finish these important jobs in prescribed time period.   When children choose a field or area of work and parents what them to move forward and be successful in their respective fields, than parents need to teach their children the value of time and time management from childhood. Children learn most of the life lessons from their parents in childhood. Children learn what they see, it’s not possible to expect time management from children, if parents themselves waste time in unimportant work.   Parents need to improve their own time management skills, before they teach the same to their children. Now the question is how will they do that?   Parents of 5-10 year old children, should ask their children one question at the start of a day, What all will we do today?”and then list down 4-5 activities like playing an indoor game, having lunch together, watching a favorite TVshow, read a bedtime story before going to sleep at night, etc. kids brain will start registering at an early age, whether or not we were able to finish these five things a as planned during the day. They start learning this from their childhood itself.   It’s much easier to teach children the proper utilization of time in childhood. Outdoor games, rules, winning, losing etc. also plays an important role in teaching time management.   Children who fall in the age group of 10-15 years, their time needs to be properly planned with their activities. We need to keep a proper time gap in between 2 activities. For instance, suppose the child returns from school at 1:00 p.m., than he should get enough time to eat and sleep, you shouldn’t send him fortuitions immediately at 2:00p.m. Instead distribute the time in proper way, like 4:00 p.m. - 5:00p.m tuitions, 5:00p.m. - 7:00 p.m. should be play time and again 7:00p.m - 8:00pm should be allotted to studies/ tuitions.   Often we come across children who have a tight and a jammed pack schedule of activities between 4:00p.m -7 :00p.m. as a result they are under tremendous stress/ load and instead of enjoying the activities they tend to consider it to be burdensome from childhood. This in process effects their nature, hunger and sleep.   Children should be involved in the day-to-day activities like shopping, making travel plans, organizing a function in the family etc. as all these things make them learn how to manage time and work.   Children who are 15 years and above we should discuss regarding what all work needs to be done the next day. As parents we should teach them how to prioritize work, from the most important to the least important work. We should teach them that the work which is of utmost importance should be done first, followed by the ones which are least important and there can be few things which can leftout for later.   There are chances that during the process of learning the time management and the value of time, children might make mistakes. Do not get angry on them or pull them down for their mistakes. Instead, gently explain them, where they had gone wrong or where they had wasted their time. It’simportant to explain them that it is completely alright if the least important work on their list is finished in a week or even a month.   We should sit and discuss with them how and what are they planning for the upcoming exams or sports activities which are scheduled in the next 2-3 weeks.   As a parent we should take care that children are not pressurized for time management to the extent that it will hinder their inner strengths.   Parents have to be more careful in their own time management skills before teaching the same to their children. It is just not possible to expect children to follow and learn time management, when we have less time for them.
